How to Open Files that have Unknown Extensions

Extensions, or the characters that precede the last period in a file name, help you determine the type of a file (is it an image, a video or something else) and you immediately know which software program is required to preview that file.

However, you may sometimes come across files that either have unknown extensions or don’t have any extension at all. How do you then determine the associated application that is required to open a file when you don’t recognize the file type itself?

torrent file extension

The first thing you are likely to do is “google” for the file extension but there is an easier open as well. Go to Wolfram Alpha and just search for the file extension with the dot (or period) - see example.

Wolfram won’t just reveal the technical details of that file extension – like the developer and MIME type - but also generates a list of software programs that you may use to open that file on your computer – see sample results.

If a file doesn’t have an extension, you can still identify the format of that file from its signature. All known file types have a standard and unique signature (screenshot) and this data is stored in the file itself. There are programs that can read this signature* and determine the file format even if the extension is missing from the file name.

The most popular program in the category of file identifiers is TrIDNet. First download and unzip the TrIDNet utility and the associated XML definition files in the same directory. Then open the TrIDNet.exe file, press the “Rescan Defs” button to load the file signatures (you only need to do this once) and then drag-drop any unknown files that you wish to analyze.

identify unknown files

It will show the different file types that match with the file’s signature and you can then use Wolfram Alpha again to learn about the different programs that can be used to open that particular file type. Do remember to rename the files after identification (press F2, prefix a dot with the extension).

[*] You can also determine the file signature of any known file format using Wolfram itself – use the query “ file signature” as in this example.

Publish your Blog as a Magazine with Google Currents

Google’s widely anticipated alternative to Flipboard is finally here. It’s called Google Currents and the next screenshot should you give an idea of what Currents is all about.

Google Currents Producer

Google Currents is a Flipboard like app that lets you read blogs, news websites and other online publications in a magazine format on your mobile phone and tablet devices. The app is available for both Android and iOS platforms.

One big advantage with Google Currents is that you can read your subscriptions offline and it will even download the embedded images for offline access.

You can get Google Currents now from the Android Market and the iTunes Store. This is currently available only for US users but there’s at least an easy workaround for iPhone /iPad users.

google currents logoAs a web publisher, you can package one or more RSS feeds, image slideshows, tweets, videos, social network updates and any other HTML content into an “edition” and publish it to Google Currents which others can then subscribe to on their tablet or mobile phone.

[*] Digital Inspiration is also available on Google Currents.

There’s no programming required as Google Currents provides an web editor (screenshot) for publishers to create these bundles. You can also pull content from Google Docs and ePUB ebooks into Currents. The default layouts are beautiful but advanced users may apply their own CSS styles to further customize the appearance of their magazine.

Google Currents can also be used as a RSS reader to follow feeds that are not available as standalone editions. Simply subscribe to any RSS feed inside Google Reader and then pull it directly into Google Currents using Add More –> Library –> Google Reader. The plain feed will automatically be served in a magazine layout similar to other editions.

There are quite a few reading apps – like Flipboard, Yahoo LiveStand, Pulse, Zite and AOL Editions - that let you publish (and consume) online content in a magazine format. However, Google Currents is probably the only app that will share advertising revenue with publishers which is obviously a big incentive.

When Amazon introduced blog publishing for Kindle, there was a concern that people would publish someone else’s RSS feed as their own and monetize it through the Kindle Store. That is however unlikely to happen with Google Currents as it only lets you include content from domains that you have verified through Google Webmaster Tools.

Find the Perfect Mobile Plan and Save Money!

If you are based in India and carry a mobile phone, which you do for sure, here’s a useful service that may help you pick the best (or most cost-effective) voice and data plan for your phone based on your actual usage.

best mobile plan

The plan comparison service is available online at Komparify.com or, if you have an Android phone, you can get their mobile app. Read on.

Once you have installed the Android app, choose your region (or telecom circle) and your existing cellular operator from the available options. The app will read the voice call logs from the phone and based on the local / national (STD) usage, it will recommend you a list of the most cost-effective plans from your existing operator and other operators in your region. With mobile number portability (MNP) available across India, switching operators is easy so if Airtel has a better deal than Vodafone, you can quickly make the jump.

Alternatively, you may use the Komparify website to compare plans. Here you need to manually input details of your monthly voice calls and SMS usage and the service will then figure out a more cost-effective plan for your mobile phone.

[Update] The latest version of Plan Hound app also considers roaming usage – calls you made (or received) while you were outside your circle – while recommending voice plans. And it can even track your data usage while on GPRS/EDGE/3G networks so you always have an idea if you are nearing that monthly data limit.

How to Find the other Websites of a Person?

Say you are on a website example.com and would like to know which other web domains are owned by the same person who owns that example.com website. Is it possible?

Yes there are some easy workarounds (and tools) that can help you find domains owned by an individual or a company though you may not be successful on every hunt. Let’s give it a try!

web domains

When you register a web domain, your name, contact address, phone number and other details are stored with the domain in a public registry database that anyone can access online using a Whois Lookup tool.

Go to whois.sc and enter the domain name that you are trying to research. This will provide you contact details of the domain registrant and you can then use this data to perform a reverse whois lookup on Google to find other domains of that person.

"PHONE_NUMBER" site:whois.domaintools.com"STREET_ADDRESS" site:whois.domaintools.com

Replace Phone Number or Street Address in the above search queries with the actual data from the whois database. You may also perform reverse Whois Lookups by name but that may return too many results – phone numbers and postal addresses are more likely to be unique.

Some domain owners may have opted for “private” registration (Google Apps does this for free) and in that case, their contact details won’t be available in the public whois database.

The next option you should try is a Reverse IP lookup. These tools determine the IP address of the server that is hosting a website - example.com in our example - and will then provide you are list of other websites that are hosted on that same server. The logic is that if a person has multiple websites, he could be using the same web server to host them.

You can use Bing to perform a Reverse IP check for any domain or an even easier tool is spyonweb.com – just put the site’s domain and it will show other websites hosted on that server. If you get hundreds of domains in the search results, it possibly means that the person is using a shared host and thus he may not be the owner of all these domains.

If a web domain is using Google AdSense ads, you can use Blekko search to find all the other sites on the web that use the same AdSense ID.

View the HTML page source of any website and look for the AdSense string which has a pattern like ca-pub-1234. The numeric part (1234) is the AdSense ID which you can put into Blekko in the following format:

/adsense=1234

Some of the returned sites could belong to scrapers but you should be able to unearth some legitimate sites as well, if they are also using AdSense – see sample.

Google AdSense is only popular among content publishers but almost every website is using Google Analytics for traffic statistics. And there are online tools available that can quickly find all websites that are are connected to the same Google Analytics account.

Go to ewhois.com and type the domain name that are you are researching. Next choose the Reverse Google Analytics ID Lookup tab and it should bring a list of all web domains (see screenshot) that are connected to the same Google Analytics ID.

This is the most effective option of them all though it would only work for live websites that use Analytics while standard Whois lookups can even find web domains that have only been registered but are not live yet.

Create Separate Profiles in Google Chrome for Family Members

Google Chrome 16 lets you create multiple user accounts but if you want to keep your web history and passwords hidden from other Chrome users, you need to create a separate profile as explained in the following tutorial.

chromeIf you have a common computer at home that you share with other family members, how do you ensure that your web browsing history in Google Chrome stays private and others don’t get to know what you search or which sites you visited from that computer?

Google Chrome does include support for user profiles now. You can create separate profiles for family members and then their bookmarks, passwords, themes and other Chrome settings won’t be visible to anyone else. For instance, if you install the ESPN app inside your Chrome user profile, that app won’t be available to mom when she uses Chrome with her own user profile.

User Profiles in Google Chrome

There’s however one big limitation with user profiles in Google Chrome. It won’t hide your web history from other users even if you have signed out of your Google Account. Anyone can switch to your user profile in Chrome (see screenshot above) and they’ll have instant access to your complete web browsing and search history with Ctrl + H and even from the browser’s address bar.

If someone inadvertently switches to your user profile in Google Chrome, it can become a slightly embarrassing situation for either of you. You can however create separate user profiles, and not just users, in Google Chrome and then your browser history, bookmarks, search terms, etc. won’t be visible to anyone else in the family. Read on.

Unlike Firefox that ships with a Profile Manager, you can only manually create user profiles in Google Chrome. Here's how:

Step 1: Launch Google Chrome and use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Del to clear your entire web browsing history.

Step 2: Open Windows Explorer and switch to Chrome's User Data folder available at:

For Windows 7 and Windows Vista C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data For Windows XP C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data

chrome-profile Step 3: While inside Windows Explorer, select the subfolder called "default" and make a copy of that folder inside the same "User Data" folder of Chrome. Rename that new folder copy to, say, Your_Name as shown in the screenshot.

Step 4: We will now reset this new "Your_Name" profile in Chrome to the factory defaults. Open "Command Prompt", use the “cd” command to switch to the Chrome Application folder (where Chrome is installed) and run the following command:

chrome.exe --user-data-dir="..\User Data\Your_Name" -first-run

Step 5: Your new user profile in Chrome is ready for use. To run Google Chrome using this profile instead of the default profile, let’s create a shortcut. Right click anywhere on the desktop, choose New -> Shortcut and type the following in the location box:

For Windows 7 and Vista:C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe --user-data-dir="..\User Data\Your_Name"For Windows XP:C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe --user-data-dir="..\User Data\Your_Name"

chrome-icons Give this shortcut a “hard to guess” name, change the shortcut icon to, say, Microsoft Word and you're done. Now your web history, bookmarks, cookies, and search terms won’t be visible to anyone else in the family and there’s no need to switch to incognito browsing mode ever.

Great Britain blames France for Warren Buffett, Jim Rogers and the Chinese shunning euro bonds

Recently, George Osborne, chancellor of the United Kingdom, likened the economic situation in France to that of Greece.  That, and Britain's sitting out of the most recent Eurozone accord, has done little to increase the appeal of European bonds in the eyes of investors.

As reported in previous articles on www.emergingmoney.com , Warren Buffett, Jim Rogers and -- as yet -- the Chinese have only incidental interest in euro bonds.  The interest rates being paid certainly reflect the lack of demand.

In addition, Jim Rogers is short European stocks and long commodities.  This was reviewed on www.emergingmoney.com in the article, " Vanguard's Emerging Market ETF near year low...wait for Jim Rogers to buy stocks again ?"

The Financial Times , in a piece by George Parker and Hugh Carnegy, "Britain denounces French attacks on its economy as 'simply unacceptable," reported that although Germany has reached out to London after the summit, the French have not.

According to the Financial Times article by Parker and Carnegy, "France is irritated it has been threatened with a downgrade despite its budget deficit, at 5.7% of gross domestic product this year, being lower than Britain's at more than 9%."

When a rescue package is concocted, there will be a need for foreign investors to buy a large chunk of the bonds.

Great Britain and France are doing little with these attacks on each other beyond ensuring that their citizens pay a higher interest cost when the bonds are issued.

Investors should look for European stocks stocks to rebound when -- but perhaps not until -- an agreement is reached that Great Britain can join.

Cricket Video - Record-Breaking Weekend In Cricket - Cricket World TV

A cricket video for Cricket World  TV about the latest cricket news looking at four batsmen - Manoj Tiwary, Kieron Pollard, David Warner and Asad Shafiq all scoring their maiden international centuries over the weekend.

It also rounds up the action from three series, which saw India beat the West Indies 4-1 in a series of ODIs, Pakistan comfortably beat Bangladesh in the opening Test in Chittagong and Australia and New Zealand tie their Test series as New Zealand won in Hobart by just seven runs.

Warner and Pollard in particular provoked most reaction for scoring their centuries after they made their names in Twenty20 cricket and many doubted whether either would have the temperament to score centuries in longer forms of the game. Warner's 123 saw him carry his bat as Australia were narrowly defeated while there were plenty of Pollard sixes - ten of them in fact - to cheer before the West Indies fell 34 runs short.

Tiwary and Shafiq are young players in whom plenty of hope and expectation has already been placed by fans in India and Pakistan and they returned some of that investment with attractive innings which unlike those fine efforts of Warner and Pollard, proved to be match-winning knocks. Tiwary's innings came in the shadow of Virender Sehwag hitting 219 in the fourth match but with Sehwag rested, none little attention was diverted.

Shafiq has been dubbed 'Mr Solid' by some and has effectively replaced no mean cricketer Mohammad Yousuf in Pakistan's middle order.

Internet money-making is realistic opportunity to spend some time on the web and get financially rewarded for doing so. A couple of my friends are making a living online and they contribute to one-stop4all.blogspot.com a lot. This time they advised me to take a look at MakeZine.com. This is a do-it-yourself technology magazine, where all articles are written by makers for people, who want to do things by themselves. So if you have some experience with technology, computers, software, ect. you can surely earn money for writing at MakeZine.com.

MakeZine.com is a very interesting community of writers and here you have a chance to make money by writing four types of content pieces: reviews, projects, features and everything else.

Paid for writing reviews

How-to guides and reviews are very popular types of content on the Internet. Nowadays we are all used to receiving free tips and tricks from the world wide web. But did you know that the authors of such articles are capable of earning good money for this type of writing. At MakeZine.com you can get paid for sending reviews to their Toolbox. MakeZine specializes in the reviews of gadgets, online tools, website widgets, newsletter building, instructional and how-to videos, books and magazines, ect.

Makezine.com pays money for creating reviews

The requirements for the reviews are: they should be at least 50 words of length and ought to provide your user experience and tips. The pay for this type of writing work reaches up to $25.

Writing DIY articles for money

Other two interesting types of paid writing projects are the “DIY” and “Major” projects. When you decide to write such an article you have to make sure that you have enough experience to guide your readers. So it goes without saying that you are to write about things you have already made.

DIY projects are short projects which run usually between 200 and 750 words. Keep this kind of project conversational, imagine that you explain the info to your friend and just write it. You should also present the digital photos of each step (high-resolution photos are welcome). Major projects are more complex projects which can take a person several hours or even days to complete them.

Additional type of accepted content is “Features”. To this category articles about interesting things made by people or groups of people are posted. There are several sections like “Made on Earth” or “Maker”.

MakeZine.com looks like a honest and easy way to earn money online by writing content. If you have experience in this field of study and would receive some moola from your writing skills, then MakeZine.com is a site, which should be number one on your to do list.

Trading the Globe: Saving China

Chinese stocks got their best rally in two weeks last night, but Shanghai is still down 29% from its peak. The macro numbers have been horrible. What will it take for Beijing to step in? Tune in tonight on CNBC for the answers.

Last week's industrial production numbers came in at their worst since August 2009 -- when the global economy was still digging out from the Lehman Brothers disaster.

Monetary supply is crawling along at its lowest level in over a decade, reflecting a dramatic downturn in demand for yuan as well as Beijing's efforts to clamp down on lending.

Exports are up 13.8%, which would be great for any country that does not have China's track record of 20% to 25% export growth.

But it looks like the government is actively buying stocks in Shanghai now and there might be another reserve requirements cut over the weekend.

Added stimulus could also be on the way.

Remember: the Chinese market began a rally in November 2008, months before the rest of the world realized the credit crisis was already easing.

Shanghai was a leading indicator then, and then led the world down in April.

Will it be a leading indicator again?

Weak rupee looks positive for Indian IT (INFY, WIT, ICN)

The declining Indian rupee is wreaking havoc with farmers, but analysts at Ambit Capital predict "clear short-term benefits" for the Indian IT sector, including Infosys ( INFY , quote ) and Wipro ( WIT , quote ).

Analysts Ankur Rudra and Hardik Shah say that as a rule of thumb, every 1% drop in the rupee  ( ICN , quote ) leads to a 2% gain in IT company earnings, "all else being equal on an unhedged basis."

How much a company can gain depends on how much of its revenues are unhedged.

Rudra and Shah say that INFY is among the least hedged (40% - 45% of quarterly revenues) and will benefit the most.

WIT is much more hedged (95% - 110% of quarterly revenues) and will benefit the least.

While the slide in the rupee provides the IT industry with a cushion to profit margins, Rudra and Shah stress that the relationship is complicated by other factors.

IT companies may have to cut billing rates to their clients, reducing revenues in the long term.

There is also a negative correlation between changes in the exchange rate and IT company stock prices. Those short-term benefits may just be a flash in the pan.

Putin takes a cue from Brazilian politics after protests

Vladimir Putin is putting the week's political unrest behind him and, so far, traders are going along with it. This seems to be right out of the Luis Inacio Lula da Silva playbook of market-friendly personal transformation.

Putin is promising to crack down hard on illegal protests while simultaneously distancing himself from his own United Russia party, which lost a lot of ground in Sunday's parliamentary elections. His new "All-Russia People's Front" promises to be "above all parties," giving him a base to run for president next year without what appears to be growing stink around United Russia. Two signals here. First, do not mess with Putin. Second, it was not his fault. While it is a totally different landscape, this is reminiscent of Brazilian president Lula's tactics after the 2004 Mensalao scandal, in which his own party paid off parliamentarians to ensure their votes. Lula said he knew nothing about it, no evidence ever emerged and the people believed him. Traders seem willing to go along with it in Putin's case because the RSX ( quote ) has recovered from the worst of the week's losses and is now down 4% since Friday's close.
