India left it to their last-wicket pair of Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron to scramble a one-wicket victory over the West Indies in the first One-Day International in Cuttack.

Defending 211 for nine, the West Indies looked to be on the cusp of an unlikely win when Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 72 and Ranganath Vinay Kumar for 18 needing ten runs to win but Aaron and Yadav held their nerve to hit a couple of decisive boundaries and put India 1-0 up in the five-match series.

Sharma hit three fours and one imperious straight six as he shared in important partnerships with Ravi Jadeja (38) and Kumar to steer India from a position of 59 for five to one from which, eventually, painstakingly, they would go on to win the game.

Darren Bravo had earlier scored 60 and Danza Hyatt 31 but they were the only West Indies batsmen to spend valuable time at the crease and the inability of their team-mates to apply themselves similarly would cost them dear.

In their primary roles, Yadav (2-33) and Aaron (2-47), struck early to emove Lendl Simmons, bowled by Yadav for 19 and Marlon Samuels, bowled by Aaron for ten.

Adrian Barath's blitz of three fours in 13 balls came to an end when he was caught by wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel off Kumar for 13 before Bravo and Hyatt added 75 for the fourth wicket to put the West Indies in a strong position.

However, India fought back and after an awful miscommunication between the two batsmen left Hyatt run out by yards, Bravo fell when he was bowled by Raina.

India's spinners then choked the run-rate, Ravichandran Ashwin and Jadeja picking up a wicket apiece for a cost of 30 and 42 runs respectively as they bowled economically with only Andre Russell, who made 22 in 20 balls, threatening to break the shackles.

India made a similarly quick but error-strewn start to their run chase, Patel (12) helping himself to a couple of leg-side boundaries befor he cut Roach to Anthony Martin at point having just failed to get sufficiently over his shot.

Gautam Gambhir (4) barely got going before he edged Roach to Denesh Ramdin and the quick bowler had his third wicket when he burst through the defences of Virat Kohli to bowl the right-hander for three.

Virender Sehwag, captaining India as Mahendra Singh Dhoni takes a rest, made 20 in 29 balls before he was bowled by Russell and when Raina gave his wicket away to be caught by Bravo off the same bowler for five, India were in deep trouble with just 59 runs on the board and half the side dismissed.

Sharma and Jadeja calmly accumulated runs as they came, putting on 83 for the sixth wicket which was broken when Jadeja drove outside off stump and sliced Kieron Pollard straight to Simmons at backward point, much to his frustration, and Pollard's delight.

Vinay Kumar then made 18 to offer Sharma vital support but his dismissal, caught by Roach as he drilled Sammy to mid off five balls after Sharma was bowled via his pad by leg-spinner Martin, changed the context of the game and appeared to have undone the hard work.

However, Yadav and Aaron ensured that the game was not lost, the pair putting on 12 runs in 16 balls and both ending unbeaten on six.

The second game in the series is in 2nd December in Visakhapatnam.

Pakistan were made to work hard but eventually another dominant performance from Shahid Afridi carried them to a 20th consecutive One-Day International victory over Bangladesh in Dhaka.

Afridi took five for 23 and then top scored with 24 not out as Pakistan closed on 93 for five in 25.4 overs after Bangladesh had managed to hit just 91 before being dismissed for their second lowest score against Pakistan on their way to a five-wicket defeat.

Pakistan then slumped to 63 for five to briefly raise hopes of an unlikely home win but they were extinguished by a brisk unbroken 30-run partnership between Afridi and captain Misbah-ul-Haq, who was unbeaten on 16 in 46 balls.

Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat but were quickly in big trouble, losing Tamim Iqbal to Mohammad Hafeez before a run had been scored and quickly collapsing to 31 for five as Naeem Islam (5), Mushfiqur Rahim (11), Shahriar Nafees (7) and Mahmudullah (1) were also dismissed.

Shakib Al Hasan and Nasir Hossain tried to rebuild the innings, scoring 15 and 21 respectively before both were guilty of playing loose shots to give their wickets away and expose the tail.

Afridi made short work of the lower order and but for Rubel Hossain's unbeaten 15 in ten balls, Bangladesh would have set an unwanted new low score against the disciplined Pakistan side.

Afridi's haul saw him become only the second player after Sanath Jayasuriya to have scored 6,000 runs and taken 300 ODI wickets.

The tourists then progressed seamlessly to 36 before Imran Farhat was bowled by Nasir as he chopped on to his stumps for 15 and they then lost three wickets for two runs when Hafeez (22), Younus Khan (2) and Sarfraz Ahmed (2) departed in quick succession to almost throw the game open.

Misbah then dug in to prevent Bangladesh's advance and despite Shakib producing a belting delivery to clean bowl Umar Akmal for seven, his defiance allied with some controlled aggressive hitting from Afridi steered Pakistan into a deserved 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

A spirited performance with the ball saw Shakib return two for 42 and Rubel, who removed Hafeez and Sarfaz, two for 23.

The next game is in 3rd December at the same venue.

China pulls off “short squeeze” in manipulating copper market, again, as it also has with corn and cotton (JJC, CORN, BAL & GLD)

One of the nice things about having $3.2 trillion in foreign reserves -- more than any other nation -- and a state-controlled economy is that it allows China to continually manipulate markets for commodities such as copper ( JJC , quote ), corn ( CORN , quote ) and cotton ( BAL , quote ). As reported in an article in the Financial Times , "Copper soars to hit $8,000 level," it has been a good week for the red metal, a key component of a wide range of industrial and construction activities throughout the world.
The exchange traded fund for copper, the JJC, is up almost 9% even though every major user of copper (China, Europe, India, US, Brazil) is reporting or projecting lower economic growth.
In addition, Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan (JPM both downgraded commodities such as copper this week.  According to David Wilson, director of metals research for Citigroup, as quoted in the Financial Times piece by Emiko Tereazono and Javier Bias, this rally was due to "fund activity rather than any fundamental change in the overall outlook, including the macro economy."
In other words, it is not fundamental economic demand that is fueling the rise, rather speculation.
In this, Beijing pulled off a classic "short squeeze" to drive up the price of copper. In easing its monetary policy, China caught many "in bearish" positions according to the Financial Times .  Noted David Wilson, "The market has been very short, for sure."
As China is, by far, the world's biggest consumer of copper, the price was obviously going to rise after the announcement.  Also of note is that this is the first time in three years that Beijing has reduced the reserve requirement for banks, which can now lend more to copper consumers .
China also wreaked havoc with the corn market this year.  Early in the summer, articles in The Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times reported of record demand for corn from Chinese buyers.  As a result, the exchange-traded fund for corn (CORN) rose from about $38 in March to over $50 by late August.  Since then, it has fallen to under $40.
Further proof is the trajectory of the ETFs that track gold ( GLD , quote ) and copper (JJC).
There should be an inverse relationship between these funds, as copper rises in price due to greater demand from growing economies while gold rises in price due to a lack of confidence in fiat currencies due to floundering economies.
But both the GLD and the JJC have risen sharply since October.  For the year, however, the GLD is up double digits, while the JJC is down double digits.

Shipping is down but the Baltic Dry Index is up (SEA)

While the Guggenheim Shipping ( SEA , quote ) exchanged-trade fund is down, the Baltic Dry Index is up. What is causing this nominally bizarre divergence between shipping stock benchmarks? The Baltic Dry Index tracks worldwide shipping prices of various dry bulk cargoes (coal, building materials, grains).  It is widely valued as an economic indicator as it measures the demand for shipping capacity as opposed to the supply of dry bulk carriers.
As the supply of cargo ships is tight, an increase in demand is quickly reflected in the Baltic Dry Index.  An order for a dry bulk cargo ship is not placed unless the work is definite.  The Baltic Dry Index is now at 1,862.   The range for the Baltic Dry Index over the past 52 weeks is 1,043 to 2,179.  For 2011, it is up over 5%.
An increase in the Baltic index is generally considered bullish for commodity prices, since those ships would not be moving without an increase in underlying demand for coal, iron ore and other bulk commodities.
Despite the increase in the Baltic Dry Index, the Guggenheim Shipping (SEA) ETF is down more than 46% for 2011.  It has fallen in value for the month, the quarter and the year.
SEA covers a wide shipping index, not just dry bulk carriers, though.  A short position of 8.84% has been established -- and remember, a short position of 5% is considered troubling.

Fiat is floundering in the U.S. (FIATY, GM & F)

Fiat SPA ( FIATY , quote ) is selling few of the Fiat 500 subcompact in the United States due to strong competition from Ford Motors ( F , quote ), GM ( GM , quote ) and many other foreign car makers.
As a result, according to an article in USA Today by Chris Woodyard and James R. Healey, "Fiat's U.S. sales chief ousted," the marketing head for America, Laura Soave, has been fired.

She was tasked with a virtually impossible mission.  Entry-level buyers in many countries, particularly the United States, have a plethora of well made, very attractive cars from around the world from which to choose: the Ford Fusion (F) is just one example.
GM, as reviewed in the USA Today piece, just introduced the Spark, its third subcompact after two other successful models, the Cruze and the Sonic. These cars also come with comprehensive warranties of up to 100,000 miles, such as those offered by Hyundai from South Korea.
It is difficult to discern exactly the void FIATY thought it was filling in the United States with the 500.  If there is a consumer market that is mature and saturated with advertising and products, it is U.S. auto sales.
The Fiat 500 is very important as it is the small, fuel efficient subcompact that Chyrsler needs for its line-up of vehicles.  But, according to Automotive News , 29 of Fiat's 130 US dealerships did not sell a single 500 last month.
Fiat is not giving up on the 500 model, described as "impish" by Healey and Woodyard in USA Today , however.
The USA Today piece pointed out that the 500 Abarth, "a macho version" of the subcompact, was just introduced, hopefully to increase sales "the vehicle's appeal to men."

Selling these rallies in the euro and Aussie dollar (UUP, FXE, FXA)

In overnight trading the U.S. dollar changed little against the other major currencies as forex markets took a breather from yesterday's furious volatility.  Even the Aussie dollar slid some 0.8% against key counterparts when Chinese manufacturing PMI data fell short of expectations.
Traders last night got confirmation that China's factory sector is shrinking for the first time since early 2009.

This data point is key for Australian economic growth: China is main buyer of coal and iron ore and if China's PMI numbers are foreshadowing things to come, Australia's industry sector falls victim to declining economic growth and interest rates -- and these affect the exchange rate.
What does this mean for traders? This is a perfect example of why traders need ahead and ask themselves "what if" questions to stay ahead of the market by one or two steps.
With this mind we look ahead and reevaluate the recent flow of news.  What we see is the likelihood the brakes will be applied to the risk appetite we seen in the preceding 24 hours.
It goes without saying the main catalyst for traders' optimism was the announcement major central banks' announcement of a 50-basis-point reduction in swap rates.
As traders cheered the announcement and sent markets screaming higher, traders are now waking up to a not-so-rosy picture.
Let's run through some analysis and try make some sense of the market so we can make money and not lose it.
* Reducing the swap rates allows the ECB to borrow U.S. dollars from the Federal Reserve at lower cost rate, in which in turn pass through the savings to the banks in need of liquidity. This done to presumably to reduce the credit shortage threat in the Europe's banks that are scrambling for cash to cover huge losses on failed loans and euro sovereign debt.
* While traders took this news as positive catalyst at first blush, it should signal traders to prepare for the default of a euro zone member state or at least a major bank . Not a very encouraging sign.
* If the world's monetary policy leaders were confident in the ability of the member state officials to get their house in order, the swap rate reduction would have been unnecessary.  Some may suggest the move was purely precautionary rather than confirmation of worst-case scenarios. But this brings traders right back around to the question of confidence in euro zone policymakers.  And that, in turn focuses us on the fact that the G10 central bankers saw a creditable threat that Europe would have failed here.
In summary, it only seems reasonable that some of the pro-risk sentiment from yesterday would be unwound with profit taking and traders realigning their risk exposure. Optimism is already fading and suggesting the safe-haven U.S. dollar may mount a deeper recovery against its sentiment-linked counterparts.
The above analysis continues to support our view point of selling rallies in the both the EUR/USD and AUD/USD.
